Maintain to Sustain

September found us with a small skeleton crew tackling various maintenance projects and prepping for the transition of seasonal operations. Projects included:

  • Bridge repairs & maintenance - adding fill to the entrance/exits, improving sight lines and drainages, replacing rotten decking, stringers & footers, leveled & shimmed various sections to help with the longevity and sustainability of some of the oldest and longest bridges on the network.
  • Chipping away at corridor maintenance ahead of the winter season by brushing back branches on the side of the trails and up in the canopy to allow for more snow to reach the ground to improve snow cover and allow for a wider trail with less infringement on the track set for classic skiing.
  • Machinery & equipment repairs and maintenance for winter grooming.
  • Site visits and scouting for future trails.

Note from Trails Director CJ Scott:

This year's trail crew was awesome. I truly enjoyed working with all of them and I can honestly say this was one of, if not the BEST trail crew I have had the pleasure of working with in my 20 years with KT. The camaraderie we established with crew rides, Donut Fridays, end of the day ice creams on hot days and overall joking around and laughing together while on trail really brought back a sense of a strong team while out there slinging dirt.

This summer we received numerous accolades for all the work we accomplished, from the maintenance projects that kept the trails running smooth and sustainable to the new trails we installed that gave folks new terrain to explore. They all crushed it this summer and I could not be more grateful for their efforts.

Thank you crew!

Vermont State Treasurer, Mike Pieciak, speaks at the 2025 Outdoor Recreation Day at the Statehouse
By Abby Long February 13, 2025
KT is taking action—on the trails and in the Statehouse! This 2025 Legislative Session, KT is teaming up with other amazing trail organizations through the Vermont Trails & Greenway Council, to advocate for H.147 a bill to establish the Recreational Trails Compensation Study. Why does this matter? Vermont’s outdoor recreation economy generates $2.1B annually, nearly 5% of the state’s GDP, that's 2nd in the nation after Hawaii (Go VT!) KT alone drives $10M in economic impact annually. Therefore, the state must recognize and incentivize these generous private landowners, including the 106 who make KT possible and allow public access to trails.
